John Cooper has served as Professor of Music and Composer in Residence at the College of the Atlantic since 1989. He also serves as Director of COA's Center for Creative Studies in Improvisation.
Previously he held positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Lincoln University. This is his 33rd year as a music educator.
He publishes his classical works for saxophone exclusively with Dorn Publishing. Donald Sinta, world renowned classical saxophonist has commented on Cooper's 1st Sonata for Alto Saxophone: "I love it. It's from the heart and I identify with all of it". Cooper's 1982 text on
Jazz Improvisation, "Steps Ahead" has recently been reprinted by request for use by the Rowan University Jazz Program, under the direction of stellar saxophonist Denis DiBlasio. Cooper is active as a jazz clinician/adjudicator throughout the northeast, and is the composer of numerous scores for PBS documentaries. He has performed with such jazz luminaries as Grover Washington,Jr, Cecil Payne, Jim Snidero, Marvin Stamm, Victor Mendoza, Charlie Ventura, Patty Wicks, and Tony DiNicola, as well as under the baton of Etore Stratta.
Professor Cooper has served as conductor of the Maine All State Jazz Combo in 2005, the Maine All State Honors Jazz Band in 2000, and the Maine All State Jazz Band in 1996. He is a Past President of the New Jersey Unit of the International Association of Jazz Educators, and he is founder and Musical Director of the Maine Saxophone Quartet.
