David Palazola, a native of Maine, has been passionate about, and has always felt a deep connection to music, since before he can even remember. Always singing along to the radio and trying to figure out piano and guitar, his childhood was one inspired by a fascination of sound. He began playing drums at age 10 and fell in love, from that moment he lost any doubt of what he wanted to do with his life. When the time came, he attended the Berklee College of Music and graduated with a BM in Performance. He has studied with Francisco Mela, Terri Lynn Carrington, Bob Gullotti, Ralph Peterson, Mike Bennett as well as many others, and has been profoundly influenced by a myriad of musicians ranging from Tony Williams to Tom Waits, from Fela Kuti to Flying Lotus. Always striving to be as versatile and diverse of a musician as possible, he has played in many musical contexts including in more traditional straight-ahead jazz groups, as part of the backing band for a Pop/R&B vocalist, as a member of a 20 piece jazz orchestra playing South Indian Fusion music, as a studio sessionist for folks like Harvey Eyeballs, and in his most natural state, laying down thick, fat groove with no shortage of fire and musical energy in his 9+ piece afro-funk/freak-jazz group Doh-Rall.
He will be spending the coming Winter in Gambia, West Africa to study Sabar and Djembe drumming as a way of expanding his musical consciousness and learning more about the world. In the coming years, he plans on pursuing a Master's degree from the new Berklee school in Valencia, Spain.
